DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT:
The word “Hardine” is of Syriac origin, meaning fear or fright. Some researchers argue that the name stems from the words “haret” (alley) and “deen” (religion), owing to the numerous places of worship (approximately 30 churches and monasteries) in the village.
In addition, the headquarters of the Maronite Patriarchate was located in Hardine before it was moved to Wadi Qannoubine.
HIKING LEVEL. 1 to 3 for easy, 4 to 6 for intermediate, 7 to 9 for strenuous
Due to the topography of the ground, you will ascend and descend some slopes, so the hike will be a Level 4 and 6.
For both levels, the hike will start from the upper mountain of Beit Kassab village’s center. You will visit the important landmarks and get a clear explanation about them; for example, The Historic Monastery of St. Paul.
The «rocky tile of Hardine» is a must to see; it is one of the biggest in Lebanon, has many marine fossils and it is sloped to the west.
Hardin is a village in the middle of Batroun, known by its caves-churches and rich in remains of ancient civilizations; you will remark sarcophagi, old historic churches, old grape, olive presses and many Nawawiss carved in the rock. The trail will lead you to the house of St. Hardin, a most picturesque place where the sight and sound of the place will make you forget the city, your problems and everything!
Both levels will have lunch beside Hardin house.
LEVEL 4 (5 Km) will take the bus to “Deir Mar Faouka”; it is the most beautiful sight you will encounter; its dome is built on a Romain temple. The convent is located in the midst of breathtaking oak tree where you will see archaeological sites.
Afterwards, you will go to the caves-churches overlooking Batroun area. They are recently built to accommodate people seeking spiritual meditations in silence. From there, you’ll visit the Phoenician Temple: This temple of God Mercury with 30 majestic pillars goes back to the time of Emperor Hadrian Augustus (117-137 A.D).
LEVEL 6 (10 Km) will walk the same trail on your feet. It is not very hard, but it requires good physical conditions. After reaching the roman temple, you will have a rest to catch back your breath and take beautiful photos of the region; it deserves the effort we do to reach it because it offers a very unique scene in all directions. The walk back downhill will start afterwards.
Hardin’s hike is not just a hike in a very beautiful nature, along streams, huge trees, and breathtaking views; It is a cultural tour as well.

The hidden treasures and beauty of Lebanon are yet to be unveiled.
