DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT:

=========================

Join us for a special hike from Rachaya Al-Wadi village to Ain Harsha Roman Temple!

Rashaya is a most attractive little town seated on the western slopes of Mount Hermon. The township of Rashaya has always occupied a strategic position overlooking the et-Taim valley which is why the impressive and famous fortress was built. The citadel was in turn Canaanite, Greco-Roman, Arab, Crusader and Ottoman.

This famous town, famous in history and heritage but turned to the future, offers visitors a delightful natural setting, with its high plateau dominating the valley, the terraced gardens, thousand red-brick houses, and its main street once paved in stone (each stone is numbered), now known as the “Souq” (market), leading up to the Citadel of Independence it’s the most important to see. There are four old churches (“Al Saydet”, “Sayedat El Najat” and the oldest church in the region. It is “Mar Mousa el Habashi”, and it is a Syriac-Catholic church.

Rashaya offers a varied landscape and it is considered one of the most enchanting places for hiking in Rashaya District, especially during this season.

Ain Harsha Roman Temple is one of the best-preserved temples on Mount Hermon. It is built of local limestone and blends in so well that it is virtually camouflaged among the rocky crags and boulders. A large stone (broken in two) in front of the temple, carries an inscription in Greek that dates it 114-115 AD. The temple was restored in 1938-39 and the west wall-the side you see as you approach-is so perfect it is easily mistaken for modern. Around the temple are more remnants of ancient habitation, including sarcophagi.

HIKING LEVEL: 1 to 3 for easy, 4 to 6 for intermediate, 7 to 9 for strenuous

Our hike will be divided into two levels (4 and 5), and will be a moderate one:

Level 4 and Level 5 will walk together for 10 km.

After the lunch break, Level 4 will take the bus to the Ain Harsha Roman Temple, while

Level 5 will continue walking for an additional 4 km distance to reach the location.

Our hike will start at the citadel of Rashaya, at a 1200 m altitude above the sea level. After visiting the Citadel, we will go on a downhill road (not a difficult one) for 5 km, until 900 m of altitude. Then, we will start going up the valley, on a path that turns into a river during winter. We will pass through trees and bushes where the views are remarkable, until reaching a 1000 m altitude. The road that we will take is part of the LMT trail, and it will lead us to a location with oak trees, where the old Rashaya village used to stand. There, we will have a well-deserved lunch break, after which Level 4 will take the bus to the Ain Harsha temple.

Meanwhile, Level 5 will walk uphill for 3 km (the slope is not that steep), then downhill for 1 km before reaching the Ain Harsha Temple.

If we have time at the end of the hike, we will come back to Rachaya and discover the landmarks of the village (such as the old souk).

Rashaya – Ain Harsha hike is not just a hike with very beautiful nature, huge trees, and breathtaking views. It is a cultural tour as well. DO NOT MISS IT!

Protect yourself and others around you by knowing the facts and taking appropriate precautions:

   Distancing from each other is a must.
