Kandy, locally referred to as Maha Nuwara (meaning The Great City), is the Hill Capital and one of the most scenic cities in the country. It is also home to one of the most revered places of Buddhist worship in Sri Lanka. The sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is housed in the temple, known as the Dalada Maligawa.
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, the finest of its kind in Asia, the largest of the botanical gardens of Sri Lanka, couldn’t be better located. In the Mediterranean climate of Kandy, the gateway to the Central Highlands, the Gardens, at an elevation of 500 meters above sea-level, were tightly bounded on three sides by a loop of River Mahaweli (Great sandy river), the largest river of Sri Lanka. Peradeniya is believed to take its exotic name from Sinhalese names Pera (guava) and Deniya (a plain). The name also reveals, although Guava is not indigenous to Sri Lanka, introduction of the fruit to the island and cultivation had occurred even prior to the era of British Colonialists in Ceylon.
Nuwara Eliya, once called “Little England” nestles at the foot of Sri Lanka’s tallest mountain Pidurutalagala and is home to some of the best tea plantations in the world. Surrounded by wooded mountains and a picture sque lake, its cold temperatures calls for sweaters, log fires and blankets – a pleasant contrast to the island’s otherwise hot and steamy tropical weather. In terms of entertainment, it is home to the famed Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and Race Course. During the season in October it attracts visitors from within the country and overseas, and the town turns in to a hub of activity with its local Derby and motor races. It is the perfect base for hikes, picnics and trout fishing in the surrounding lakes and river
A Sri Lankan coastal city famous for golden beaches, Bentota is situated on the southern coastal tip of the Galle District of the Southern Province.
Colombo – The name “Colombo”, first introduced by the Portuguese in 1505, is believed to be derived from the classica Sinhalese name Kolon thota, meaning “port on the river Kelani”. It has also been suggested that the name ma y be derive from the Sinhalese name Kola-amba-thota which means “Harbor with leafy mango trees”. Due to its large harbor and it strategic position along the East-West sea trade routes, Colombo was known to ancient traders 2,000 years ago. However, was only made the capital of the island when Sri Lanka was ceded to the British Empire in 1815, and its status as capital wa retained when the nation became independent in 1948. In 1978, when administrative functions were moved to S Jayawardenepura Kotte, Colombo was designated as the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.
