The valley is a deep gorge carved by the Kadisha River\, also known as the Nahr Abu Ali when it reaches Tripoli. Kadisha means “Holy” in Aramaic\, and the valley\, sometimes called the Holy Valley\, has sheltered Christian monastic communities for many centuries. The Valley which harbors the most ancient Christian monasteries in the world is on the verge of being radiated from the World Heritage list because of serious plagues that are destroying it. \nHistory \nAnnoubine’s history dates back to the 7th century. It has monasteries and sanctuaries spread all over the gorge\, in the form of caves or churches.\nSince the early centuries of Christianity\, the Holy Valley has served as a refuge for those in search of solitude. Historians believe that the Kadisha Valley has had monastic communities continuously since the earliest years of Christianity. It was also at times a destination for Muslim mystics\, or Sufis\, who also visited it for meditation and solitude. \nDESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT:\n======================\nHIKING LEVEL. 1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous\nThe hike offers three levels:\n🌿🥾 Level 3 (5 km\, Approx.)\, easy trail from Hawka village till Deir Saydet Qannoubine.\n🥇 Level 4 (10 km\, Approx.)\, we will start from Hawka\, visit the hermit\, St. Marina and Deir Saidet Annoubine. After lunch\, we will walk all the way to power station\, where the walk ends.\n🥈 Level 5 (13km\, Approx.)\, we will continue walking to reach Mar Licha Monastery. The track cuts through a bushy forest\, all uphill then downhill until we reach the old caves churches (Mar Licha Monastery and Mar Mikhael)\, where we cross Qadicha River\, ultimately returning to the group. \nDescription of the destination \nSaidet Hawka:\nThere you can see a tiny chapel in a huddle of caves and grottos with the barest remnants of fresco paintings. The Aassi Hawka (cave) in particular\, has yielded archaeological items indicating Palaeolithic\, Roman\, and medieval periods of use. A Colombian hermit now resides there. We will have the chance to visit him. \nDeir Saidet Annoubine:\nThis is one of the oldest Monasteries in Lebanon. The monastery was built in a rocky pit\, most probably by Byzantine emperor Theodos the Great in 379 – 395. Deir Annoubine monastery was to become the seat of the Maronite Patriarch in the 15th century and to remain so for 500 years. The monastery was rehabilitated in 1990 and is now used by the Antonine Sisters who welcome pilgrims to spend the night. \nSt. Marina:\nThe chapel of St. Marina now holds the tombs of eighteen patriarchs. The chapel of St. Marina stands in the memory of a girl named Marina who entered Annoubine monastery disguised as a monk. (The whole story will be told during the hike). \n🎒 WHAT TO TAKE:\n============== \nHealthy snacks that will boost up your energy such as dried fruits\, lunch\, water\, cap\, sunglasses and sunscreen. In fact\, this village dates back to the Phoenician era. It stands royally on a harmonious set of hills at an average altitude of 500 meters over one of the most renowned and important historic capitals of culture the city of Byblos\, this Phoenician city that bequeathed the alphabet to the world.\nFoxes wander in its valleys and multicolored butterflies sip the delicious liquid of the flowers. Bentael is the first protected area which was developed by a non-government organization in 1981. The reserve is situated in the flight path of migratory hawks\, eagles and other raptors and is enjoyed by bird enthusiasts\, declared in 2008 as an Important Bird Area (IBA). \nWill have the opportunity to get to know a great talented Lebanese artist JOSEPH TOUFIC MATAR. “His eyes embrace all\, but he sees in depths beyond what his eyes see\, perceiving what only the Spirit can perceive!”\nYou will visit his museum and studio during our hike.\nHIKING LEVEL. 1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous\nLEVEL 5 (Distance of 12 km – 4 Hrs approx.) is a combination of uphill\, straight and downhill inclinations. You will start from the Reserve and pass though very tall trees glorifying God. You will also notice old hermitages carved in the rocks dating back for more than 1500 years “the St. John’s rock-cut” chapel. This 12th century dwelling is located at 8m above the ground and can be reached from the hiking trail. It is composed of three cavities. Researchers believe that the first one was used for habitation as a refuge in case of attack\, the second shelter is the remains of St. John’s chapel\, and the third is a water reservoir for approximately 2.5m deep and 2 m wide used to collect rain water. It was mentioned as “Ambi” in Tall-El-Amarina letters\, in the 14th century B.C. It was also mentioned in the Assyrian engravings during the reign of King Asr-Hadoun (681-669 B.C).\nDuring the Greek-Roman era\, Anfeh was mentioned as “Trieres”\, which means the ship with three rows of oars.\nIn the Byzantine Empire\, “Trieres” was mentioned in a wider aspect. It was a patriarchal center\, and its pastor participated in the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.C. It was destroyed by the earthquake that hit the Mediterranean eastern coast in the middle of the 6th century (551 A.C).\nIn the seventh century AC\, Anfeh became a part of the Arab empire. It was mentioned in the Hadith of Prophet Mohammed that Anfeh was a strong barrier in the Roman sea. It is also known that Muawiya\, the founder of the Umayyad dynasty\, built a part of his military fleet in it.\nThe Crusades occupied Anfeh early in the 12th century. They called it “Nafin” and rebuilt its marine citadel [The Citadel of Anfeh].\nIn 1289 A.C\, Al-Mamaleek lead by Sultan Qalawun obliged the Crusades to withdraw from Anfeh. They destroyed its marine citadel and threw part of its stones in the sea. Afterward\, they made Anfeh the center of a district consisting of Al-Koura and Bcharreh areas.\nDuring the Ottoman occupation\, Anfeh became the administrative center for the Side of Anfeh that consisted of 13 villages and 14 farms. Later\, it became the center of Qaza Al-Koura (district of Al-Koura) during winter\, and a Serail [The Old Serail] was built in its southern area.\nDuring the French mandate\, Anfeh was an important base. During World War II\, a military airport was built in Al-Sawdat\, southern Anfeh.\nSince the independence of Lebanon\, in 1943\, Anfeh has been playing a significant role in different social\, academic\, political\, and economic aspects of the country.\nThe name Batroun is related to the Greek Botrys\, which was later Latinized Botrus. Historians believe that the Greek name of the town originates from the Phoenician word\, bater\, which means to cut and it refers to the maritime wall that the Phoenicians built in the sea to protect them from tidal waves. \nOur tour\, due to its privileged location on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea; will be an easy and beautiful trail at Anfeh. First\, we will go and take an easy path leading to “Saidet el Natour”\, an old historical monastery\, due to its strategic location it was invaded by all kinds of soldiers who passed through this area.\nLater on\, we will walk in the old village rich in ruins and caves and visit a very old Byzantine church (Our Lady of the wind) and the Citadel of Anfeh located on a peninsula known as “Rass Anfeh” and considered a Crusader residue characterized by its rock-cut channel (Al-Khandaq)\, we will encounter as well old graves\, mosaic pieces\, Salinas\, wind wheels\, hills\, caves olive presses\, and Phoenician salt pans\, where you can take a lot of unforgettable pictures.\nA tour inside the castle will take place before proceeding to Nabu\, a modern and exceptional museum in Chekka hosting a rare collection of mosaics and historical pieces from the Mediterranean coastline\, as well as permanent exhibitions by local artists.\nLater will head to Batroun\, crossing by the Chekka tunnel\, which is currently one of the top tourism destinations in Lebanon.\nWe will visit Batroun (Christmas village) the historical “St. Stephan’s Cathedral” near El Basha Bay\, walk in the old Souk\, reach the “Phoenician wall and Fortress” and visit “Our Lady of the Sea” to finish our walk at “Makaad el Mir”.\nA delicious seafood sandwich lunch will follow in a popular seafood shop/restaurant in Batroun.\nOn our way back to Beirut\, we may stop in Batroun to drink fresh Lemonade.\nDiversified.? Yes! You will encounter a lot of things on this tour! \n🎒 WHAT TO TAKE:\n============== \nHealthy snacks that will boost up your energy such as dried fruits\, lunch\, water\, cap\, sunglasses and sunscreen. Most probably\, its name goes back to marriage endowment (Mohr = endowment) and its vineyards (Karm= vineyard)\, which were considered the bride’s endowment\, which resulted in its name Karm El Mohr (endowment’s vineyard). \nThe Town of Karm Al Muhr is home to the Aycha Fortress built on the heights of Al Fawwar spring. The town also used to depend on agriculture\, particularly the cultivation of apples\, pears and wheat. However\, this sector is witnessing regression nowadays.\nHIKING LEVEL:1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous\nLEVEL 4 (8 km) will start from Dairaiya village; you will walk in the woods crossing oak trees\, marvelous sceneries\, you just have to be there to believe! You will benefit from many rest breaks and you will enjoy this hike in the heart of nature so keep your cameras ready for photo shooting.\nLEVEL 6 is 4 km longer; The stunning mountainous landscape\, with cedars “Ghabet Ain Hkailet” seemingly defying gravity and growing on extremely vertical slopes\, is impressive. The path is alike level 4 with an extra 1 hour ascending and descending exciting trail that requires more physical effort. The trail at about ends up 1750m in the middle of the cedar forest. We won’t have rest breaks as level 4.\nIn our return to Beirut\, our stop can be in Batroun to drink fresh Lemonade. Diversified? Yes!!!!!!!1!!1!1!1\nDon’t let any adventure go by untried. The Monastery of Qozhaya (Deir Mar Antonios Qozhaya – دير مارانطﻮنيوﺱ ﻗﺰحيا) sits on the opposite flank of the Qadisha from Qannoubin Monastery; it was first built at the beginning of the fourth century. It was several times looted\, set on fire and razed to the ground\, but there still remain vestiges dating back to the seventh century.\nThe Monastery is truly a national center of prayer\, pilgrimage and tourism. It comprises a corridor\, meeting room\, museum and chapel\, with a mill and a number of hermitages cut into the rock nearby. The story of the Monastery is the story of the Christians in Lebanon and in the Middle East\, the story of cultural\, economical\, social and political development in the Lebanese society and in the region.\nAfter about 1700 years\, the Monastery continues to be a sign of faith and an expression of behavior.\nIt must be mentioned here that the Monastery of Qozhaya possesses a library containing archives\, scholarly compendia and Syriac manuscripts. The first printing press in the Middle East (1584) was placed in this Monastery which still has the Scepter of St Louis\, the King of France (1226-1270).\nAll the above-mentioned wealth\, whether natural or cultural\, pushed the UNESCO to register Monastery of St. Anthony Qozhaya on the list of International Patrimony under the number 850.\nHIKING LEVEL. 1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous. \nLEVEL 4 (around 7 km) will start from the village of Bane. After the visit\, you will take a downhill easy trail for about 300 m. From there\, you will continue our path of 3 km downhill to the valley\, cut the path of a thick forest\, and cross the beautiful waterfalls in the River of the Qadisha\, and many of the ruins of old houses\, stone bridges and hermitages until we reach the Monastery of Qozhaya where the lunch break will take.\nFrom there you will take the bus to visit the historical “St. Michael’s Church”. There shrine the mortal remains of the parish priest Yousef Abi Maroun Maatouq (1847-1929)\, a Godly priest whose remains are still whole\, knowing no decay until now.\nAfter the visit you will take the bus to join the level 6 in the village of Fraydis. \nLEVEL 5 (around 13 km) After the visit to the Monastery\, you will have a long downhill hike for about 200 meters\, seeing old cave churches. The trail will continue to Fraydis where you meet the other group at the village and continue together. The trail goes a bit further downhill\, then it becomes straight all the way to Mazraet El-Nahr\, seeing the water dam\, Qadisha river\, some old shacks and wonderful views. \nWHAT TO TAKE:\n============ \nHealthy snacks that will boost up your energy such as dried fruits\, lunch\, water\, cap\, sunglasses\, and sunscreen.
