Douma is also derived from the Latin word “Doman” used to designate a Queen (Julia Domna) famous for her beauty and intelligence. Historians believe that the Greek name of the town originates from the Phoenician word\, bater\, which means to cut and it refers to the maritime wall that the Phoenicians built in the sea to protect them from tidal waves.\nAnfeh is an old town that goes to the Canaanite-Phoenician era. It was mentioned as “Ambi” in Tall-El-Amarina letters\, in the 14th century B.C. It was also mentioned in the Assyrian engravings during the reign of King Asr-Hadoun (681-669 B.C).\nDuring the Greek-Roman era\, Anfeh was mentioned as “Trieres”\, which means the ship with three rows of oars.\nIn the Byzantine Empire\, “Trieres” was mentioned in a wider aspect. It was a patriarchal center\, and its pastor participated in the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.C. It was destroyed by the earthquake that hit the Mediterranean eastern coast in the middle of the 6th century (551 A.C).\nIn the seventh century AC\, Anfeh became a part of the Arab empire. It was mentioned in the Hadith of Prophet Mohammed that Anfeh was a strong barrier in the Roman sea. It is also known that Muawiya\, the founder of the Umayyad dynasty\, built a part of his military fleet in it.\nThe Crusades occupied Anfeh early in the 12th century. They called it “Nafin” and rebuilt its marine citadel [The Citadel of Anfeh].\nIn 1289 A.C\, Al-Mamaleek lead by Sultan Qalawun obliged the Crusades to withdraw from Anfeh. They destroyed its marine citadel and threw part of its stones in the sea. Afterward\, they made Anfeh the center of a district consisting of Al-Koura and Bcharreh areas.\nDuring the Ottoman occupation\, Anfeh became the administrative center for the Side of Anfeh that consisted of 13 villages and 14 farms. Later\, it became the center of Qaza Al-Koura (district of Al-Koura) during winter\, and a Serail [The Old Serail] was built in its southern area.\nDuring the French mandate\, Anfeh was an important base. During World War II\, a military airport was built in Al-Sawdat\, southern Anfeh.\nSince the independence of Lebanon\, in 1943\, Anfeh has been playing a significant role in different social\, academic\, political\, and economic aspects of the country. \n🥇 🌿🥾 Our event will start with a visit to Mseilha Fortress and head towards the Dam and Lakes with amazing scenery of the Spring magical touch on the trees in the valley of Nahr El Jozz. A huge 🔭 panoramic breathtaking view and even the sea can be 👓 seen when weather conditions are especially good. It is not to be missed.\nYanouh\, once a ⚱️Phoenician center\, is halfway between Byblos and Baalbek\, their Phoenician temple\, is a monument to the same religion as that of Apheca\, but the later Roman temple was dedicated to Diana\, the Roman goddess of the hunt and daughter of the god Jupiter.\nYanouh is known for its 2nd century CE 🏛 Roman temple\, its 🪙 Byzantine basilica\, and medieval chapel. In 750 AD\, at the time of the fifth Maronite patriarch\, John Maron II\, then installed in Yanouh\, the Roman temple was converted into a church consecrated to Saint George The blue. Between 750 and 1277\, twenty-three successors of Patriarch John Maroun resided there; under the Crusades\, the number of Yanouh’s inhabitants had risen to 3500\, Yanouh is also notable for its Hellenistic cult building containing the earliest Aramic inscription found in Lebanon. it mentions a “House of God” and was dated to around 110-109 BCE.\nTell el Kharayeb (“Hill of Ruins”) remains in Yanouh date back to the third millennium BCE; these include a town of about 150 meters in diameter\, surrounded by a defensive wall and a lower urban quarter extending towards the south of the site. \n🌿🥾 HIKING LEVEL: 1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous\nOur hike will be divided into 3 levels.\n🥈 This hike is easy for LEVEL 6 and is about 12 km long. The hike starts at Akoura village\, the trail is mostly straight and uphill at the beginning\, straight in the middle\, and descendent and straight at the end. You will visit many ancient historical churches\, Mar Saba\, Mar Geryes\, Mar Botros\, Mar Semaan (Roman temple)\, and the Roman road. You will visit Saydet el Habs located upon the peak overlooking marvelous views like in Harissa\, you will get the feeling of being on top of the world! Then you will descend a staircase of 600 steps and walk through an apple orchard\, then head to the Ozor forest of Mar Edna. We will have lunch there\, later will visit the ancient nun’s monastery and descend a Phoenician Roman dirty road and walk through an apple orchard\, to reach the Ozor forest of Tell El Kharyeb. There will meet with the level 4 and will explore the Phoenician\, Greek\, and Roman Temples and the ancient Saydet Yanoun Church ام الله.\n🥇 LEVEL 4\, is about 8 km long. The same trail as level 6 but after visiting the ancient nun’s monastery\, will separate and will join by bus the other at Yanouh Temples and will explore our treasure.\n🥇 If you prefer an easier hike LEVEL 3\, you have the possibility to stay at Saydet el Habs after the visit so you will have enough time to contemplate charming horizons at this altitude and you will have lunch there. Afterwards\, we will take the staircase over the tunnel to reach the foothill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The views are remarkable — don’t miss them! \nThe historical inscriptions found at the mouth of the Nahr-el-kalb (Dog River\, the Lycus of the Romans) represent a unique combination of history and geography.\nA total of 17 plaques have been traced\, all on the south bank except for one on the north bank. The single stele on the opposite side of the river was the work of the Neo-Babylonian king Nebuncadnezzar II (604-562 BC). It is famous by its 🦟 Honey Production since the ottoman empire.\n🌿🥾 HIKING LEVELS: 1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous.\nOur hike will be divided into 2 levels: \n🥈 Level 2 it’s only visiting the amazing landmarks.\n🥇 Level 4 (Approx. 8 km / 3:30 hours)\nOur day will begin with a visit to Deir Saidet Mayfouk (1746 AD) to see the oldest Maronite icon in Lebanon. Afterward\, we will start the hike\, passing by a traditional water source that will allow us to refill our water supply along the trail.\nThen we will visit Saint Charbel cave (Roman Fortress) where he used to pray and continue to Mar Saba abandoned church. The amazing scenery that your eyes catch upon reaching these amazing landscapes is really awesome. We will walk an easy path and pass by Deir Mar Geryes\, a beautiful place where we can see a TANNOUR made from clay. Views are fantastic from there; Batroun and Jbeil are easily observed. Our lunch will be nearby\, and then we will start and head towards the upper part of Osbeh village. Later we will take an easy downhill trail to the old monastery of our Lady of ILIGE (1120 AD); an ancient church located in Mayfouk -Jbeil\, it was the Maronite patriarchal seat for hundreds of years and nowadays it is turn to a national archeological site. It is one of the corners of the holy triangle of Saint Charbel and Sainte Rafka and Saint Hardini. From there the path is downhill and will lead you to Mayfook spring to meet the bus once again. It is a great place to end the hike!\nThen\, we will visit Saint Charbel Cave (Roman Fortress)\, where he used to pray\, followed by a walk to Mar Saba\, an abandoned church. The breathtaking scenery upon reaching these landscapes is truly spectacular. We will follow an easy path\, passing by Deir Mar Geryes\, a beautiful spot where you can see a clay-made Tannour. The views from there are fantastic\, with Batroun and Jbeil clearly visible.\nOur lunch will be nearby; after which we will head towards the upper part of Osbeh village. Later\, we will take an easy downhill trail to the old Monastery of Our Lady of Elige (1120 AD)\, an ancient church located in Mayfouk-Jbeil. This site served as the Maronite patriarchal seat for centuries and is now a designated archaeological site. It is one of the corners of the holy triangle of Saint Charbel\, Sainte Rafka\, and Saint Hardini.\nThe trail continues downhill\, leading us to Mayfouk Spring\, where we will meet the bus once again.\nFrom there we will continue by bus to Qattara to visit Deir Mar Challita (1848 AD).
