It was mentioned as “Ambi” in Tall-El-Amarina letters\, in the 14th century B.C. It was also mentioned in the Assyrian engravings during the reign of King Asr-Hadoun (681-669 B.C). \nDuring the Greek-Roman era\, Anfeh was mentioned as “Trieres”\, which means the ship with three rows of oars.  \nIn the Byzantine Empire\, “Trieres” was mentioned in a wider aspect. It was a patriarchal center\, and its pastor participated in the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.C. It was destroyed by the earthquake that hit the Mediterranean eastern coast in the middle of the 6th century (551 A.C).  \nIn the seventh century AC\, Anfeh became a part of the Arab empire. It was mentioned in the Hadith of Prophet Mohammed that Anfeh was a strong barrier in the Roman sea. It is also known that Muawiya\, the founder of the Umayyad dynasty\, built a part of his military fleet in it. \nThe Crusades occupied Anfeh early in the 12th century. They called it “Nafin” and rebuilt its marine citadel [The Citadel of Anfeh]. \nIn 1289 A.C\, Al-Mamaleek lead by Sultan Qalawun obliged the Crusades to withdraw from Anfeh. They destroyed its marine citadel and threw part of its stones in the sea. Afterward\, they made Anfeh the center of a district consisting of Al-Koura and Bcharreh areas. \nDuring the Ottoman occupation\, Anfeh became the administrative center for the Side of Anfeh that consisted of 13 villages and 14 farms. Later\, it became the center of Qaza Al-Koura (district of Al-Koura) during winter\, and a Serail [The Old Serail] was built in its southern area.  \nDuring the French mandate\, Anfeh was an important base. During World War II\, a military airport was built in Al-Sawdat\, southern Anfeh. \nSince the independence of Lebanon\, in 1943\, Anfeh has been playing a significant role in different social\, academic\, political\, and economic aspects of the country. \nThe name Batroun is related to the Greek Botrys\, which was later Latinized Botrus. Historians believe that the Greek name of the town originates from the Phoenician word\, bater\, which means to cut and it refers to the maritime wall that the Phoenicians built in the sea to protect them from tidal waves. \n  \nOur tour\, due to its privileged location on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea; will be an easy and beautiful trail at Anfeh. First\, we will go and take an easy path leading to “Saidet el Natour”\, an old historical monastery\, due to its strategic location it was invaded by all kinds of soldiers who passed through this area.\nLater on\, we will walk in the old village rich in ruins and caves and visit a very old Byzantine church (Our Lady of the wind) and the Citadel of Anfeh located on a peninsula known as “Rass Anfeh” and considered a Crusader residue characterized by its rock-cut channel (Al-Khandaq)\, we will encounter as well old graves\, mosaic pieces\, Salinas\, wind wheels\, hills\, caves olive presses\, and Phoenician salt pans\, where you can take a lot of unforgettable pictures. \nA tour inside the castle will take place before proceeding to Nabu\, a modern and exceptional museum in Chekka hosting a rare collection of mosaics and historical pieces from the Mediterranean coastline\, as well as permanent exhibitions by local artists. \nLater will head to Batroun\, crossing by the Chekka tunnel\, which is currently one of the top tourism destinations in Lebanon. \nWe will visit Batroun the historical “St. Stephan’s Cathedral” near El Basha Bay\, walk in the old Souk\, reach the “Phoenician wall and Fortress” and visit “Our Lady of the Sea” to finish our walk at “Makaad el Mir”. \nA delicious seafood sandwich lunch will follow in a popular seafood shop/restaurant in Batroun. \nLast but not least\, our wine tasting will be in Clos du Phoenix – Edde. It is one of the rare terroir wines produced in Lebanon. The quality is the wine guaranteed by traditional winemaking methods used manual harvesting. The winemaking is under the supervision of the French oenologist\, Yvan Jobard. A special place there\, La Terrasse de Clos du Phoenix\, a sea view over the Mediterranean. \nOn our way back to Beirut\, we may stop in Batroun to drink fresh Lemonade. \nDiversified.? Yes! You will encounter a lot of things on this tour! \n  \nProtect yourself and others around you by knowing the facts and taking appropriate precautions: \n   Distancing from each other is a must. \n   Cover your nose and mouth with your face masks. SUMMARY:Hiking for a cause at Bentael Sat\, Dec 17\, 2022 كل فشخة بترسم بسمة with DALE CORAZON - LEBANON EXPLORERS
DESCRIPTION:“We only have what we give” – Isabelle Allende \nDear Lebanon Explorers\, \nit’s the perfect time of the year to give and help drawing a smile on children faces. \nSo mark it on your calendar: this December 17\, a charity event will take place and we will be hiking at Bentael – Mechhellene to support “Monks of the brothers and Nuns of the Sisters of Jesus crucified” in their mission.\n“رهبان اخوة الصليب و راهبات أخوات يسوع المصلوب”\nThey are taking care of abandoned babies/new born found on their doors and every step\, every backing will help them. They bear seeds of authentic faith\, and live that faith through prayer and asceticism; they have led a committed community life of brotherly love deep rooted in individual prayers and work hard with their hands. \nAll the proceeds will go to the convent. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nHiking through the forest with cultural heritage and archeological sites!!   \n  \nHIKE LOCATION                :  Kfarmashoun – Bentael /Jbeil / Mount Lebanon                        \n============                    300 to 850 meters above sea level. \n                                              8.5 km from Byblos. \n  \nWHEN                                 :  Saturday\, December 17\, 2022 \n===== \n  \nENCOUNTER PLACE                 :  Saint Abda Church parking facing the New-bridge\, \n===============                     Jal El Dib @ 7:30 AM     \nDriving directions to Saint Abda Church:       https://www.google.com/maps/place/Saint+Abda+Church+-+Jal+El+Dib \nOr Martyrs Square at Al-Nahar Bldg.\, Beirut Downtown @ 7:10 AM \n  \nFEES:                             \n==== \n399\,000 LL/person or 10 $ including transport\, professional guides\, 5 minutes of warming up\, stretching\, and pictures. \nOptional transportation by your own vehicles. In fact\, this village dates back to the Phoenician era. It stands royally on a harmonious set of hills at an average altitude of 500 meters over one of the most renowned and important historic capitals of culture the city of Byblos\, this Phoenician city that bequeathed the alphabet to the world. \nFoxes wander in its valleys and multicolored butterflies sip the delicious liquid of the flowers. Bentael is the first protected area which was developed by a non-government organization in 1981. The reserve is situated in the flight path of migratory hawks\, eagles and other raptors and is enjoyed by bird enthusiasts\, declared in 2008 as an Important Bird Area (IBA). \nWill have the opportunity to get to know a great talented Lebanese artist JOSEPH TOUFIC MATAR. “His eyes embrace all\, but he sees in depths beyond what his eyes see\, perceiving what only the Spirit can perceive!” \nYou will visit his museum and studio during our hike. \nHIKING LEVEL. 1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous \nLEVEL 5 (Distance of 12 km – 4 Hrs approx. – Altitude is 450m to 850m) is a combination of uphill and downhill inclinations. You will start from Kfarmasoun village and walk until you reach Meshehlen village where two old historical churches\, Mar Edna and Mar Semaan stand and tell about the area history. You will then head to the Reserve and pass though very tall trees glorifying God. You will also notice old hermitages carved in the rocks dating back for more than 1500 years “the St. John’s rock-cut” chapel. This 12th century dwelling is located at 8m above the ground and can be reached from the hiking trail. It is composed of three cavities. Researchers believe that the first one was used for habitation as a refuge in case of attack\, the second shelter is the remains of St. John’s chapel\, and the third is a water reservoir for approximately 2.5m deep and 2 m wide used to collect rain water. There are stone sculptures as well illustrating “the Sacrifice in the Phoenician Culture” from around 1500 B.C. You will visit the museum of Mr. Mattar and if we were lucky\, we may meet him and talk to him about his artworks. Afterwards you will walk back to Kfarmashoun in a long amazing trail and you will have enough time to contemplate those incredible sceneries and take a lot of photos. \nLEVEL 3 will take an easier track\, after the visit to the old churches of Mar Edna and Mar Semaan\, to reach the bird watching tower of the reserve\, the attractive spot overlooking magnificent mountains views. You will have some rest\, take as many photos as you wish and then continue the hike in the reserve of Bentael with level 5\, admiring old hermitages\, dense pine forests and great views. Lunch will be outside the reserve. Afterwards you will walk back to Kfarmashoun with level 5 and you will then go visit the studio of JOSEPH MATAR. \nOn our way back to Beirut\, you will pass by Edde to visit Mar Geryes church and Roman ruins around it. It is a great place to end the hike. \nBentael’s hike is not just a hike in a very beautiful nature\, along old sites\, pine trees\, and breathtaking views; It is a cultural tour as well. \nDiversified.? Yes! You will encounter a lot of things in this hike! \nProtect yourself and others around you by knowing the facts and taking appropriate precautions: \n·         Distancing from each other is a must. \n·         Cover your nose and mouth with your face masks. To keep it on\, while we are in the bus \n·         Clean your hands often by using hand gel or other. \n  \nWHAT TO TAKE: \n============                  \n  \nHealthy snacks that will boost up your energy such as dried fruits\, lunch\, water\, MEDICAL FACE MASKS\, HAND GEL\, cap\, sunglasses\, and sunscreen. Wear comfortable walking shoes (A professional brand is recommended) and don’t forget to get a light jacket. The history of the village goes way back to an era that is still obscure because of the absence of archeological and historical assets. \nThe ruins of Faqra\, the traditional Lebanese houses\, the old and new bridges\, and the remaining mills in the Valley of the Cross are the best proofs of the importance of the village and its rich historical originality. \nWe will hike around 10Km together in one group as level 4\, for just 3\,30 hours\, will start at Nabeh El-Laban\, it will lead us to a wonderful old natural bridge of rocks carved by water millions of years ago and there you can take as many of photos as you desire then to the impressive remains of a Roman temple and a citadel built on ancient foundations still dominate the scene\, giving a view over the astounding gorge. The second part of the trail at the Golden Ozer Forest is easy and open to a panoramic view. The protected forest contains chestnut\, oak\, Turkish oak\, pine\, cedar and other tree species. \nDiversified..? Yes! You will encounter a lot of things in this hike! \nProtect yourself and others around you by knowing the facts and taking appropriate precautions: \n   Distancing from each other is a must. \n   Cover your nose and mouth with your face masks. He travelled to Lebanon\, Syria and the Holy Land in 1832–33. Unquestionably\, the Lebanese mountains come into literature by Lamartine\, giving rise to the greatest number of descriptions of landscapes. Lebanon\, its mountains and ruins\, inspired the poet much of his “Episode” called “L’épopée de La Chute d’un ange” written in 1838. \n  \nThe valley where we’re going is called the valley of Lamartine as a commemoration of that visit\, he describes the area in his book “Voyage en Orient”. Also\, the Lebanon Cedar forest still harbors the “Lamartine Cedar”\, which is said to be the Cedar under which Lamartine had sat 200 years ago. \n  \n25 Kms from Beirut\, most of the villages we will pass by are known for its pine trees that surround the village\, it’s a source of valuable pine nuts. This time we will take the bus to Kfardebian: ‘’ the village of all seasons’’ where our event will take place. \nThe name of Kfardebian originates from the Semitic language and perhaps descended from the Syriac\, which gives it the meaning of “The Village of Deers”. It played a special role in the modern era\, for it became the center of the High Mountains Area in the ‘’Moutasarifiya’’ era (1860-1914). \nThis village is well known for Faqra ruins\, the traditional Lebanese houses\, the old and new bridges\, and the remaining mills in the Valley of the Cross. They are best proofs of the importance of the village\, its rich historical originality which make it an imminent destination. \nHIKING LEVELS: 1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous. \nFirst will visit at Faqra the wonderful old natural bridge of rocks carved by water millions of years ago\, then will visit The Tower of Claudius and the Altar. There\, you can take as many photos as you desire but don’t consume all your memory cards capacity because you will definitely take more photos a few meters later. The second part of the trail is open to the sunlight therefore\, keep your sunglasses and hats on. \nProtect yourself and others around you by knowing the facts and taking appropriate precautions: \n   Distancing from each other is a must. \n   Cover your nose and mouth with your face masks. It was a Crusader fortress captured by Fulk\, King of Jerusalem\, in 1139. Saladin captured it in 1190\, and 60 years later it was returned to Crusader control. In 1268 Sultan Baibars captured the castle. In the 17th century Fakhr-al-Din II took the castle as a part of his network of fortifications\, overlooking the plane of Marjeyoun\, the Litani river and the Nabatieh region. \nHIKING LEVEL. 1 to 3 for easy\, 4 to 6 for intermediate\, 7 to 9 for strenuous \nLevel 4 is intermediate; It is a beautiful and safe walking path of just 6 KM. We will all begin from the village and head to the vast forests to visit the Deir Mimmas (1404 A.C.) located at the upper part of litany river. The stunning mountainous landscape\, with trees seemingly defying gravity and growing on extremely vertical slopes\, is impressive. We will encounter many olive trees aged thousands of years\, we will visit the Waterfalls\, Tabsoun and pass-through trees and bushes. The last part of this trail is ascendant. \nAt this point\, we will split into 2 groups\, and level 4 will have a walk in the village crossing water sources\, old houses and old narrow stone staircases and at the end we will take the bus to Tallet Allie to meet the other group. \nLevel 5 (11 Km) will walk a vertical trail to Tallet Allie. Your eyes will capture panoramic views\, even Cyprus\, Israel and Syria can be seen from this spot. You will return back on another route to meet Level 4 and walk along a track rich in beautiful views. \nLater on\, you will visit “Beaufort Castle”\, a historical fortress in “Arnoun” village overlooking the whole region. \nDeir Mimas hike is not just a hike; it is a cultural tour as well.\n\n\nProtect yourself and others around you by knowing the facts and taking appropriate precautions: \n   Distancing from each other is a must. \n   Cover your nose and mouth with your face masks. \nA local Guide may accommodate us and introduce the village from his perspective. \n  \nOur tour\, due to its privileged location on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea; will be an easy and beautiful trail. \nLater will head to Batroun\, crossing by the Chekka tunnel\, which is currently one of the top tourism destinations in Lebanon. \nWe will visit Batroun the historical “St. Stephan’s Cathedral”\, walk in the old Souk\, reach the “Phoenician wall and Fortress” and visit “Our Lady of the Sea” to finish our walk at “Makaad el Mir”. We will have a boat trip for around 30 mins at El Bahsa bay if there is no high wind. \nA delicious seafood sandwich lunch will follow in a popular seafood shop/restaurant in Batroun. \nLast but not least\, who can visit Batroun without swimming in its fresh and clean waters? \nWe will visit a beautiful public beach and have time to relax\, have fun and swim before heading back home. To keep it on\, while we are on the bus.   \n   Clean your hands often by using hand gel or other. \n  \nWHAT TO TAKE: \n============                  \n  \nHealthy snacks that will boost your energy include dried fruits\, lunch\, water\, MEDICAL FACE MASKS\, HAND GEL\, a cap\, sunglasses\, a swimsuit\, a towel\, and sunscreen.
