DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT: ========================
Definitely, a sunset hike in Mayfouq is an option to spend summer evenings. The name is derived from the Syriac language, meaning “water from top” i.e “MAY FAWQA”.
Our Lady of ILIGE is an ancient church was built over the ruins of a pagan temple dedicated to the Sun God,”Eel”. (God of the depth), a Maronite patriarchal seat for hundreds of years and now a national archeological site in Lebanon. It is one of the corners of the holy triangle of Saint Charbel and Sainte Rafka and Saint Hardini. Mayfouk is famous by its Honey Production since the ottoman empire. |
HIKING LEVEL. 1 to 3 for easy, 4 to 6 for intermediate, 7 to 9 for strenuous
Level 4 (2.45 Hours approx.) is an easy and pleasing trail. Our event will start by a visit to Deir Saidet Mayfouk (1746 AD) where we will see a very old icon (that of Our Lady of Elige 1100 AD), the oldest Maronite icon in Lebanon and will visit Saint Charbel cave where he used to pray, then the bus will take us to the top of the village to Osbeh village, where we will start our hike.
We will walk an easy path open to the sea and pass by Deir Mar Geryes, a beautiful place where we can see a TANNOUR made from clay. Views are fantastic from there; Batroun and Jbeil are easily observed. The path will lead us to a very old abandoned church, that of Mar Saba.
After finishing the trail, we will gather near a bonfire at the village and we will have the opportunity to take boiling tea and will have manakich dinner baked on saj cooked by local villagers. This sunset hike is not to be missed. It will imprint unforgettable memories of a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Protect yourself and others around you by knowing the facts and taking appropriate precautions: Distancing from each other is a must. Cover your nose and mouth with your face masks. To keep it on, while we are on the bus. Clean your hands often by using hand gel or other. Don’t let any adventure go by untried. Live your life to the fullest!
